Microsoft Exchange is still the de facto standard for email when it comes to business. Over the years, however, Apple has been making inroads into the Enterprise market and bringing a flock of new Windows users to Apple. These new Apple converts still use Exchange and need to synchronize calendars using Apple’s iCal.
Fortunately, it is easy to synchronize your Exchange calendar with Apple iCal. Let’s run through the steps.
Open Apple Calendar from your Apple dock. Select Calendar Preferences (Figure A). Figure A: Adding an Exchange Account to Apple Calendar. Select + and the Add Account wizard appears. Enter in your Outlook email address and password. Click Create (Figure B). Figure B: Enter your Outlook email address and Password.
If more information is necessary, you will be prompted to enter user account credentials as well. If you do not have this information, contact your help support (Figure C). Figure C: Enter your Exchange authentication username and password. After entering the appropriate information, click Create. Exchange now appears on the sidebar of your calendar entries.

Jan 24, 2013 The thing I don't understand is that I don't even remember adding any subscriptions. I'm not even sure what a subscription is in regards to iCal, but I guess I'd better find out, since mine seemed to appear on it's own. ? @ AJRJSW - Your method just makes the subscription invisible - it's still there. I wanted to delete mine completely. Re: Yahoo Calendar not syncing with Mac Calendar same behavior - took forever to finally get my mail working again (delete, recreate, delete, recreate) but Calendar can NOT be enabled. Looking back at the system log seeing 401 not authorized calls when yahoo calendar is trying to be accessed by mac calendar.
You now have your Exchange and iCloud calendars synchronizing to one place. You can choose to synchronize your Exchange calendar at the following intervals: 1, 5, 15, 30, 1 hour and manually. If you are currently managing multiple iCal calendars as well as a separate Outlook calendar, why manage them in different places? Simply, connect your Exchange account to Apple Calendar and manage all your calendars inside Apple Calendar.
I’ve made the transition and now am working exclusively with iCal, but my colleagues are still stuck on Google Calendar. How can I subscribe to their calendars so that they show up on iCal rather than me having to log in to Gcal to see what’s going on?
I can remember when these various calendar apps first came out and each was what the cognoscenti like to call a “walled garden”: if you didn’t use that app, you were out of luck. Not so good if you’re part of a team and don’t feel like imposing tools upon colleagues (or family members). Fortunately things have improved significantly since then and there’s a lot of interconnectedness between the different applications, and iCal can handle a number of different calendar formats too. As far as I can tell, however, if you subscribe to an external calendar on iCal, that doesn’t translate into it being disseminated across your Mobile Me account, so you might have to move some appointments from one calendar to another if you want to edit them or see them on your remote device.
In terms of just seeing more than one calendar, however, it’s pretty easy. To do this you’ll want to be logged in to your Google Calendar account and have already accepted the sharing invitations from your colleagues so that their calendars also show up. You’ll also want iCal running.
Now, step one, go to Google Calendar and pop up the contextual menu associated with your colleagues calendar: Choose “Calendar Settings” and make sure you’re on the “Calendar Details” tab. Now scroll down to the bottom. You’ll see: On the “Private Address” Option-click on the “iCal” button. Now you’ll see this: Choose “Copy Link” and you’re done with Google Calendar. Flipping to Apple iCal, choose Calendar – Subscribe and you’ll see this little window: If you’re guessing that you paste the URL you’ve just copied from Google Calendar, you’re right!
Do so, click “Subscribe”, and you’ll shortly see: Before you leave this window, you’ll definitely want to change the auto-refresh setting so that if they update their calendar, your view updates too (in fact, it’s odd that the default is to never update!) I suggest that daily is sufficient unless they’re constantly changing their schedule, in which case you might consider hourly, or even more frequent. Get everything configured as you like, then click on “Okay” and you’re done! The calendar now shows up on iCal on the left under “Subscriptions”.
Hope that gets you going with Google Calendar / iCal interaction!
