Okay, so I went out and bought a Brother DS-620 scanner. Brought it home, hooked it up to my mid-2010 iMac running Mavericks. Didn't see it. Went to download the latest drivers and saw a beautiful note reading 'late October.'
(Brother refused to give me a better ETA, a progress report, or anything but a blow off). Thing is, it's not seeing the scanner at all. It's not even in system profiler. I can't work out whether this is really just the drivers or if there's a hardware problem with the scanner. The USB port I have it plugged into works fine. It's getting power (it's a mobile scanner that runs off the USB port). I did try switching out the cable for another compatible one I had handy.
I also tried force-reinstalling the 10.8 drivers on the off chance that might get it to show up in system profiler. What I'm worried is that I'll wait for the drivers only to find the scanner is defective.and its too late to return it to the store, complicated by being out of the country next week. So I'm trying to find out if the drivers not being compatible would cause it not to show up at all (not even as Unknown Device), if it's a firmware issue (I see no way, however, to force a firmware update on this device), or if the scanner itself is defective. (None of this will get my document scanned, of course, but.meh.) My trust in Brother was very high up until now. No.I already tried all that. It is not showing up as even.existing. in anything - system profiler, image capture, anything.
This is not an all in one, but a straight scanner. So I can't work out if it's the drivers or if it's defective. Image capture gives DEVICES 0 SHARED 0 and No camera or scanner connected. I appreciate the attempts, but it's the wrong question - can this be caused by bad drivers or do I have defective hardware? (I have to GUESS because I don't have a 10.8 machine to test it on or access to one by any means - and I'm sure as heck not asking Brother).
So, I need some educated guesses. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
